National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD) – An Introduction
Established in October 1978, the National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD) in Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is an organization that conducts comprehensive medical research on Minamata Disease. With regards to its historical implications and social importance, the institute aims to improve the treatment for the victims of Minamata Disease and be the foremost research center focusing on Minamata Disease.
As the data and information collection grew, the Minamata Disease Archives was established in June 2001, functioning as the information center for all things Minamata Disease. In July 2003, NIMD was consolidated into the National Environmental Research and Training Institute, contributing to its advanced facilities, including international environmental cooperation and training,
What are the available Certified Reference Materials (CRM)?
The NIMD offers a selection of certified reference materials (CRM) (e.g., hair and urine) that is in compliance with the requirements of the quality control systems in ISO Guide 35. Laboratories in universities and public and private research institutes that perform chemical analysis related to the Minamata Convention on Mercury can obtain the CRM from NIMD at no charge.
